A long, slow job

Article Abstract:

The UK's Department of Trade and Industry, the European Union and the nuclear industry have joined forces to provide funding for the decommissioning of four nuclear reactors across Europe. In the UK, the Windscale Advanced Gas-Cooled Reactor, built in the late 1950s, is being completely dismantled before the site is returned to nature. The project includes defuelling the reactor, removing its four large heat exchanges and demolishing the spherical 'golfball' structures that have been a feature of the landscape for almost 50 years. These operations are set to last until at least 2004.

Starting over

Article Abstract:

It has been necessary to adapt to considerable change since the National Engineering Laboratory (NEL) was privatized in Nov 1995, according to director and general manager Bill Paton. The organization is now fully exposed to commercial pressures, and has had to considerably reduce its workforce. However, there have also been some elements of continuity. The department of trade and industry is still NEL's largest customer, for example, and NEL still provides a very similar range of skills and expertise.

Coming clean

Article Abstract:

The three dormant reactors at the Dounreay Nuclear Power Plant in the UK are set for decommissioning. The process is expected to take about 30 years and will involve the removal of radioactive fuel rods and coolants, dismantling of the reactors and remediation of the land. Another challenge facing project members is the cleanup of a 65.5 m deep shaft which was used as a dumping area for radioactive waste between 1959 and 1977.
