GCHQ

Article Abstract:

The UK's Government Communication Headquarters (GCHQ) is at the leading edge of communications technology, with around one third of its employees being graduates. The centre is involved in super computing, parallel processing and artificial intelligence and has the largest network infrastructure in Europe. GCHQ offers a variety of challenges to new engineers who can gain experience in several areas before becoming expert in a particular field.

Losing flutter

Article Abstract:

Engineers at the UK Imperial College's Centre of Vibration Engineering are engaged in developing numerical models of flutter in gas turbines. The researchers are using new integrated methods that treat fluid and structure as a single medium for the more accurate modeling of energy exchange. The prediction of flutter would provide companies with competitive advantage by decreasing the development time between the design to production stage.

Rolling process

Article Abstract:

Electrical Steels of Orb Works and the University of Wales have created a system to continuously measure the hardness of steel in a production line. The system provides accurate measurements of mechanical hardness of coils and reduces costs by using equipment that is already on included in the production process. It can also improve its own accuracy by feeding additional data into its database.
