A new fast track for public works

Article Abstract:

Oregon Department of Corrections officials opted for the construction management/general contracting system for the construction of the Snake River Correctional Institution (SRCI). This public contracting method proved effective for the project which had a set time frame and a tight budget. The use of value engineering and the combined efforts of the construction manager/general contractor, architect/engineer and the owner yielded design solutions which were cost-effective and functional. It also enabled the state to rechannel its savings to other programs for the institute.

Waterfall aeration works

Article Abstract:

Engineers have adopted a natural method of purifying water, known as sidestream solution. The alternative to instream aeration involves the lifting of water by pumps out of the canals for aeration by offstream waterfalls. Five sites involving the construction of these wastewater facilities are expected to be operational by 1997.
