A once-privileged physics lab faces uncertain future

The 100 physicians and engineers who work at Centro Atomico Bariloche in Bariloche, Argentina, are concerned that the research and training institute may be dissolved. Its patron, the National Atomic Energy Commission (CNEA), was downsized and its independence from government control reduced.

Physics: applause for a high wire act

French researcher Georges Charpak won the 1992 Nobel Prize for his work on the proportional wire chamber, a device which allows researchers to track charged particles and is used by nearly all particle detectors.
