President Clinton made a speech at Rutgers University, New Jersey in Mar 1993. He asked his fellow Americans to undertake some form of community service to help resolve problems of crime, drug use, education and health care. He also announced changes in the student loan system, students will repay their loans as a small part of their post-graduation salaries. It is hoped this will encourage students to take socially useful rather than well-paid jobs after graduation.

Bertelsmann bets on Web for its future, will invest $1.2 billion

Bertelsmann AG, Europe's biggest and the world's fourth-biggest media firm, will spend $1.2 billion by the end of 2001 for its e-commerce and other multimedia operations. CEO Thomas Middelhoff said that Berteslmann invested $2.6 bilion on acquisitions and other ventures in the fiscal year 1999. Most of which were on the purchase of US publishing giant Random House and the 40% stake Bertelsmann acquired in barnesandnoble.com.

A temporary bridge
Article Abstract:
Caltrans has built a modular bridge that can be constructed quickly to temporarily take the place of a multi-lane freeway bridge destroyed during an event such as an earthquake or flood. The bridge is made from railroad flatcar decks and can be erected in less than a day.
