Incentives help researchers resist lure of commerce

Improving research opportunities in China are motivating Chinese scientists to return from abroad, reversing the brain drain. Academic salaries are far lower that those in business, so the government is setting up award programs to encourage young scientist.

Agriculture finds a niche; drug researchers seek help

Article Abstract:

China has moved quickly to apply agricultural biotechnology and is a world leader in use of genetic techniques in rice culture. Its biopharmaceutical efforts are less inventive. Better standards and more coordination are needed in all areas of biotechnology.

Government focuses funds, and hopes, on elite teams

China focuses its research funding on a network of 155 national laboratories, including the world-class National Laboratory of Solid State Microstructures. Other key labs specialize in intelligent systems, biomacromolecules and infrared physics.
