The threat of severe budget cuts brought over 90 affiliate organizations of the AAAS together for the first since the 1980s to develop a unified agenda for saving science spending. Plans included a National Coalition for Science and Engineering and a 'Consensus Statement' to be sent to Congress.

AAAs program builds cooperative research

The AAAS' Research Competitiveness Program was established to help support research in the scientifically isolated states that make up the Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR). The new program is funded by the National Science Foundation.
