At the deep end

Article Abstract:

The UK's Defence Evaluation and Research Agency (DERA) has traditionally been involved in researching and developing military submarine and submersible structures, but the technology is being adapted for use in non-military applications. Of particular interest is work on pressure hulls, and civilian funding has allowed DERA to continue developing deep diving pressure hulls capable of full ocean depths. The agency is investigating the use of fibre reinforced polymer composites to replace the traditional metallic pressure hulls.

Cup-winning composites

Article Abstract:

The America's Cup class technical committee sought to make the yacht races less expensive and technical, so it has adopted SP Systems' proposal for yacht design based on the monocoque structure. The boats must have advanced designs and materials but be buildable by small, cash-poor teams. The design has thick cores and light frames, and a rigid single-unit hull and deck with shell skins of unidirectional carbon filaments and a honeycomb core.

Composites move into power

Article Abstract:

Glass reinforced plastics have good insulating and mechanical properties and are widely used in electrical applications, such as generation, transmission and end use. Composites are used in the AC generator with the most critical glass reinforced plastic (GRP) elements being shrouding rings. GRP is also used in cooling towers at power generation plants and to mould blades for wind turbines.
