Autoxidation reactions of different aromatic o-aminohydroxynaphthalenes that are formed during the anaerobic reduction of sulfonated azo dyes

Article Abstract:

Solfonated azo dyes are known to resist degradation in conventional aerobic sewage treatment plants. Yet, these dyes are known to be degraded by microorganisms. Three reductive products of azo dyes produced in the presence of oxygen were studied. Dye samples were also incubated in an oxygen-free environment. Samples where also subjected to finely filtered sewage sludge. The results showed that naphthalene derivatives can be an efficient reduction agent for a wide range of azo dyes. The data also should help predict the autoxidation behavior of various oxygen-sensitive o-hydroxyaminonaphthalenes.

Novel cyclic process mediated by copper oxides active in the degradation of nitrophenols: implications for the natural cycle

Article Abstract:

CuO aerogel (20m2/g) is efficient in mediating the catalytical degradation of a variety of nitrophenols under light. This was gleaned from a study of the reaction leading to nitrophenols degradation by different copper oxides or Cu salts. Findings indicate that up to 10 consecutive catalytical degradation cycles for 2-nitrophenol were successfully mediated by CuO aerogel under light. Oxidant used was air (O2) at pH 2.5, instead of the more expensive peroxides currently in use.

Mechanism and kinetics of the OH-radical intervention during fenton oxidation in the presence of a significant amount of radical scavenger (Cl-)

Article Abstract:

Researchers from Switzerland, Italy and the Russian Federation demonstrated that the decoloration of azo-dyes is due to OH radical intervention even if 60mM Cl-ion is present. Kinetic measurements of Orange II azo-dye was used as a sample.
