Between a rock and a hard place

Article Abstract:

A major portion of the 250 million Australian dollars that Australia spends on mining R&D every year is used in developing automated systems for the industry. Since the development of mining automation is hampered by constantly changing mining environments, mining R&D has focused on how the productivity of existing machines could be enhanced through the use of enhanced sensing and control technology. One such project is the Numbat, an eight-wheeled vehicle that is used to re-enter mines after such events as fires or explosions, which have increased hazards underground.

Ground control

Article Abstract:

The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration used the Southern Great Plains of Oklahoma as a testing ground for its new remote sensing equipment, which will be used in its next-generation environment-monitoring satellites. The soil moisture detection capabilities of the electronically scanned thinned array microwave radiometer and the advanced microwave scanning radiometer were compared. It was found that the former is more suitable for measuring soil moisture.

Article Abstract:

The Masquito M58 and Eagle Eye are two new helicopters designed for civilian and military use, respectively. The Masquito M58 is the first two-seater, ultralight helicopter in the world weighing a mere 170kg when empty and powered by a Rotax 582 engine which produces 64hp at 6300rpm. On the other hand, the Eagle Eye uninhabited aerial vehicle can travel 100 nautical miles in 42 minutes and spend 2.5 hours on station.
