Beyond 'big iron' in supercomputing

A new communications infrastructure anticipated by the National Science Foundation will receive $30 million in funding in 1998. A major objective is the development of software that can be applied to parallel computer architectures. The technology will be relevant to a span of disciplines.

Mastering the nonlinear brain

Techniques used in the study of brain activity are increasingly merging the disciplines of neuroscience and nonlinear mathematics. These principles are being applied in studies of epilepsy. Researchers hope the efforts will lead to nonsurgical means of controlling seizures.

Microprocessors deliver teraflops

Article Abstract:

A project funded by the Dept of Energy is developing a massively parallel computer called TFLOPS that is built primarily from off-the-shelf components. The computer will perform massive calculations on simulations of nuclear weapons tests.
