Big science enters the clinic

Article Abstract:

The National Institute of Health (NIH) will begin the women's health initiative on Sep 16, 1993. The main focus of the initiative is a clinical trial involving 45 research centers and 57,000 postmenopausal women to test the effects of low-fat diets, vitamin D and calcium supplements, and hormone therapy on disease of aging. An additional 100,000 women will be studied as a control group.

NIH's "gay gene" study questioned

Article Abstract:

Research by the NCI's Dean Hamer linking homosexuality to a gene on the X chromosome is reportedly under investigation by the Dept of Health and Human Services' Office of Research Integrity. The work is also under public scrutiny by geneticist George Ebers, who could not confirm Hamer's results.

NIH gears up to test a hotly disputed theory

Article Abstract:

Patient-advocate groups have pressured the NIH to endow a $1 million/year study to determine whether Lyme disease has a chronic form that persists after standard antibiotic treatments. Some Lyme researchers believe the chronic cases have been misdiagnosed, and call the study a waste of time.
