Bump at the end of the bridge

Article Abstract:

The best current highway engineering practice in minimizing the formation of interface bumps between bridge abutments and embankments involves a combination of good design and construction techniques with adequate maintenance procedures that meet budget requirements and safety regulations. There are ten points to consider in minimizing the formation of such costly bridge hazards. The most important is that design factors should be thoroughly evaluated in the construction of bridges.

Bridge bashing

Article Abstract:

Many bridges throughout the world are in danger of being hit by ships, given the rise in the number of merchant ships making trips to more bridges. The number of US bridges alone that cross major waterways at coastal ports has risen 33% since 1960. Several protection options exist, such as fenders, free-standing, pile-supported structures, protective islands and the dolphin protection system. However, such methods pose cost problems.

Palau files suit in bridge collapse

Article Abstract:

The Republic of Palau filed a $100 million suit against Black Micro Corp and 11 other firms for the collapse of the Koror-Babeldaob bridge on Sep 26, 1996. The collapse occurred less than three months after a 40-in. sag in the bridge's center was repaired. Palau attributes the accident to Black Micro's repair work and is demanding punitive damages from the project's bonding company American Home Assurance.
