Taking the measure of life in the ice

Article Abstract:

Ecologist Kevin Arrigo has created a model of algae production in pack ice, the bottom of the food chain in the Southern Ocean. The model assimilated satellite images, field data on physical characteristics of the ice and equations relating algal growth to sunlight, temperature and nutrient supply.
