Taking the pain out of the punch list

Article Abstract:

The punch list, an inventory of defects found in newly constructed projects, can be reduced by making use of total quality management (TQM) when construction starts. A punch list signifies that the construction is not of good standard and that more time and money have spent in improving the quality of the work. To avoid a long punch list, there should be open communication between the owner, contractor, engineer and the designer so that the mistakes can be corrected immediately.

Taking in the river

Article Abstract:

Engineers have come up with three methods for dewatering intake gates in dams. These include the needle-beam cofferdam for long-span shallow water intakes wherein one horizontal structural member is used as a support beam for vertical wood or steel needles, the hinged floating bulkheads that function similar to garage doors as operators change bouyancy and braced-wall cofferdam which involve the installation of steel frames to support needles.
