Can ESA shrug off malaise?

Article Abstract:

The new ESA head, Italian electrical engineer Antonio Rodota, hopes to restore the agency's direction and energy, which had been waning since 1995 due to budget problems, staff cuts and a mission failure. Challenges he must overcome to meet his goals are discussed.

Budget freeze nips comet camera

Article Abstract:

The European Space Agency's five-year budget freeze has put funding of a science camera for the Rosetta spacecraft, which will track the comet Wirtanen in 2013, in doubt. By ESA, charter, scientific instruments are supposed to be paid for by national budgets.

Scientists ponder new Cluster mission and uncertain future

Article Abstract:

Scientists are trying to determine if the Cluster mission can be salvaged. The mission fell apart when the launcher veered off course in June 1996. A possible reorganization of the European Space Agency may block any effort to salvage the mission.
