Carbonyl collection efficiency of the DNPH-coated C18 cartridge in dry air and in humid air

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted on the effect of air humidity on CNPH-coated C18 cartridge performance. Cartridge-impinger sampling train experiments were performed. Carbonyl concentrations measured via DNPH-coated C18 cartridge in dry air were found to be almost the same for ketones but lower for several aldehydes compared to those measured in humid air. Breakthroughs did not occur when carbonyls were sampled on DNPH-coated C18 cartridges in humid air.

Carbonyl products of the gas-phase reaction of ozone with simple alkenes

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted on the gas-phase reaction of ozone with the alkenes ethylene, propene, 2-butenece, trans-3-hexene, 2,3-dimethyl-2-butene, 1-butene, 2-methylpropene and 2-methyl-2-butene. The ozone-alkene reactions were investigated at room temperature and in one atm of air. The sums of the formation yields of the primary carbonyls approximated 1.0, consistent with the simple mechanism ozone + alkene - 2 carbonyls + 2 biradicals.

Atmospheric chemistry of isoprene and its carbonyl products

Article Abstract:

The carbonyl products of isoprene, methacrolein, methyl vinyl ketone, hydroxyacetaldehyde and hydroxyacetone were identified using in situ derivatization, liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry. In addition, their concentrations under sunlight irradiations of 1 ppm organic and 200 ppb NO in pure air were determined. Results in terms of OH-organic and ozone-organic atmospheric oxidation pathways were presented.
