Dechlorination of polychlorinated biphenyls on soils and clay by electrolysis in a bicontinuous microemulsion

Article Abstract:

Bicontinuous emulsion was used as a tool in decontaminating soil and clay samples that were contaminated with 4, 4-dichlorobiphenyl and Aroclors, the two most widespread contaminants in soils and natural water systems. Polychlorinated biphenyls were separated from the contaminated samples by electrochemical catalytic dechlorination. Contaminants exhibited dechlorination rates ranging from 0.36-6.6%. Samples which used optimum amounts of microemulsion had more efficient dechlorination. This suggests that microemulsions are effective tools for cleanup of contaminated soils and sediments.

Formal reduction potentials and redox chemistry of polyhalogenated biphenyls in a bicontinuous microemulsion

Article Abstract:

The formal potentials and the rate-determining step in the reduction of selected polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) and polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) in a conductive bicontinuous microemulsion of didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB), water and dodecane were examined. Results revealed that the first electron transfer rate determines the reduction kinetics of the PCBs and the PBBs in the DDAB microemulsion. Formal potentials were more positive compared to those in homogenous organic solvent.

Dechlorination of polychlorinated biphenyls by electrochemical catalysis in a bicontinuous microemulsion

Article Abstract:

Research has established a technology for the rapid removal of chlorine from polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) mixtures using electrolytic bicontinuous microemulsion. Future use of new methods for the elimination of pollutants will be important for preventing environmental contamination and in attempts to release PCBs from contaminated earth during clean-up operations. Further enhanced methods are envisaged with research into more economic solutions .
