China's past speaks to sustainable future

Article Abstract:

China's agriculture policies have increased output, but the overuse of machinery, fertilizers and pesticides resulted in soil erosion and pollution. Conversion of agriculture land to meet the growing population and continued use of available plots has caused a decline in production over time. To counter this problem, China has turned to traditional eco-farming methods to achieve self-reliance and to reduce the environmental and economical burden. The modern adoption of eco-farming methods is showing dividends, which is being recognized the world over.

Sustainable farming takes root in Venezuela

Article Abstract:

Agricultural sector in Venezuela is facing a crisis after the initial boom. Deforestation and overreliance on chemical insecticides and fertilizers has caused a major environmental problem. In a bid to achieve quick results in agricultural production after World War II, huge quantities of chemicals were used both as fertilizers and pesticides which has endangered the ecological system, besides proving a health hazard. It is hoped that the government will utilize the IBRD loan of $60-mil to implement a sustainable organic agricultural policy.
