Closing time: workers' last call

Article Abstract:

Results of a two-year study on the financial stability and emotional well-being of laid-off workers are presented. The employer is a national clothing manufacturer and the workers belong to its biggest plant in the Southeast. It was generous enough to give the retrenched workers a nice severance package and hired a consulting firm to coordinate retraining activities. Research findings revealed that displaced workers are anxious and depressed after losing their jobs. Those who find find new but less-paying jobs may still suffer from long-term financial and emotional stress.
