Cluster mission to rise from the ashes

Article Abstract:

The European Space Agency's Space Science Advisory Committee has recommended that the Cluster mission to study earth's magnetosphere be restarted. One reserve satellite and three to be built will replace the four that blew up in June 1996. Participating research groups will have to fund new instruments.

Ariane failure casts shadow over ESA's science program

Article Abstract:

The ESA's Ariane 5 rocket went off course shortly after launch June 4, 1996, and was destroyed in an automatic explosion. The launch vehicle was planned to be th agency's main workhorse. It was carrying the four-satellite Cluster project, which was to study the earth's magnetosphere.

Europe ponders space constraints

Article Abstract:

The European Space Agency's Space Science Advisory Committee met to try to fit high-priority missions into a dwindling budget. It appeared that there may not be funding for previously approved projects. A working schedule for future ESA missions is discussed.
