Composite motion

Article Abstract:

Researchers considering design criteria for the ThrustSSC supersonic car realized that it should have a long, slender shape, with the longitudinal distribution of cross-sectional area being as smooth as possible. There is very unsteady flow in the transonic region, and this means that the structure had to be extremely stiff. Engineers addressed this challenge by using a space-frame constructed from welded steel tube. The body panels at the rear of the car are made from titanium alloys, with the main aerodynamic profiles at the front being made from composite materials.

Learning the works

Article Abstract:

Korean car maker Daewoo is investing heavily in Poland's state-owned car manufacturer FSO. Daewoo has taken a 40.5% share in FSO, set to rise to some 90% by 2000, giving it a dominant share of the Polish car market. Some $1.5 billion has been allocated to revitalize the plant which will have a capacity for 450,000 cars by 2000. Many FSO production line managers and workers have received training in Korea before returning to share their new skills with their colleagues.
