Volcanogenic Halocarbons

Article Abstract:

It has been suggested that 75% of the world's volcanoes emit chlorofluorocarbons[CFC] which remain in a significant background concentration. In this study a quantification of this conjecture was sought. Halocarbons in anhydrous volcanic gas samples were taken from fumaroles and lava in four volcanoes[Kuju, Satsuma Iwojima, Mt. Etna, Vulcano]. Only one CFC compound was detected, CFC-11, in negligible amounts compared to anthropogenic derived concentrations. The most abundant species were chlorinated methanes, unsaturated C2-chlorohydrocarbons and chlorobenzene. An emission quantity of CFC-11 was calculated based upon accepted work for SO2 figures, the result is a atmospheric background concentration of only 1 ppqv.

Concentration variability of halocarbons over an electronics industrial park and its implication in compliance with the Montreal Protocol

Article Abstract:

In-situ and flask measurements of chlorinated compound concentrations are taken near an industrial park in Taiwan, where semiconductors and electronic products are manufactured, to determine compliance with the Montreal Protocol. Graphs show the relative concentration for chlorinated compounds, and the concentration vs wind direction.
