Concrete deterioration, East Los Angeles county area: case study

Article Abstract:

Research on the deterioration of concrete floor slabs was evaluated. Althoughthe work was praised for execution and content, corrections were made on the terminologies used. The term 'chemical deterioration of concrete' should not have been used since deterioration was physical and not chemical. It was mentioned that what moved through the slabs was liquid water and not water vapor nor vapor-carried ions. The term crystallization forces should also not have been used since no force was exerted in the crystallization process.

In wake of Los Angeles quake

Article Abstract:

The widespread damage caused by the Northridge earthquake that struck on Feb 17, 1994, revealed the need for remedial measures such as the upgradation of the code-development process, implementing stricter seismic design requirements for wood-frame structures, parking lots, steel-frame welded joints and a scientific approach of appraising seismological risks. The earthquake demolished older concrete buildings, wood-frame structures, tilt-up type buildings and parking structures leading to heavy loss of property.

Iowa County wages war on growth of wagering

Article Abstract:

Black Hawk County, Iowa, was witness to a pitched legal battle between Casino Magic and Citizens' Voting No on the issue of an expanding gaming law that permitted unlimited wagering. Despite the repeated referenda, the Citizens' Voting No prevailed as they focused on the false economics of gambling and the adverse impact expanded gambling could have on the local economy. The referenda proved the power of the local grassroot politics in ensuring the long-term socio-economic stability of Iowa County.
