The environment, innovation and industry: a case study of South Wales

Article Abstract:

Empirical evidence shows that environmental innovation within firms is considerably affected by regulation, sector and size. The experience of companies in South Wales illustrates this point, and indicates the tendency of size, sector and regulation to reinforce, rather than act independently of, each other. Hence, firms that exhibit the least motivation to make an environmental commitment tend to be small, unregulated and belong to the mechanical sector. In contrast, large, permit-based regulated and leading sector firms are most motivated to commit to environmental improvements.

Continuous improvement: design, organization and management

Article Abstract:

The diffused and extensive use of continuous improvement (CI) in Sweden while weakening the influence of the Japanese centralized "kaizen" approach suggests that these organizational designs are equivalent but dependent on national context. Swedish organizational design based on decentralized collective knowledge and action works with equally good result. Competitive advantage manifested in the strategic support and management diligence of firms in the specialized group functions.

Continuous improvement as an improvement tool for logistics

Article Abstract:

A continuous-improvement process (CIP) directs production by first installing concepts of logistics improvement and later human-orientated methods as in the case of Mercedes-Benz's Sindelfingen Plant. Mercedes-Benz first used small and fold-in modules to maximize floor usage and reduce time and cost burdens. However, the human-orientated method that deals with behavioral features such as leadership and attitudes should follow next to ensure regularity in rule-following.
