Condensing complex atmospheric chemistry mechanisms. 1. The direct constrained approximate lumping (DCAL) method applied to alkane photochemistry

Article Abstract:

A lumped mechanism created from the use of the direct constrained approximate lumping (DCAL) method was employed as a photochemical mechanism in studying alkanes. The mechanism produced from DCAL proves to be a robust alternative to semiempirical or diagnostic approaches which are constrained by inaccurate results. The development of the kinetic lumping method is significant due to the need for an efficient and accurate photochemical mechanism for photochemical simulation models.

Solubility and changes of mercury binding forms in contaminated soils after immobilization treatment

Article Abstract:

The mobility of mercury in soils at different pH and binding forms after immobilization treatment is shown to be significantly decreased by both alkali polysulfide (APS) and trimercapto-s-triazine trisodium (TMT). APS has been found to effectively transform mercury and mercury chloride into mercury sulfides while TMT has been found to be effective only on mercury chloride with both compounds serving to increase mercury desoprtion temperatures.
