Court invalidates expert panel report

Article Abstract:

A court has ruled that National Academy of Sciences advisory committees must do away with their closed-door policy and hold public business sessions. The case was brought by three activist groups after a inconsequential report was issued on the readiness of a laser-fusion project.

FDA reform starts down the track

Article Abstract:

In Apr 1996, the Senate Labor and Human Resources Committee considered a bill introduced by Rep Nancy Kessebaum that would pressure the FDA to process new drug applications more quickly. FDA Dir David Kessler warns that stricter timetables could lead to errors and inefficiency.

IOM backs cautious experimentation

Article Abstract:

An IOM panel that reviewed the use of animals as a source of biomaterials for transplants concluded that the benefits of xenotransplants outweigh the risks. The Dept of Health and Human Services is preparing guidelines for clinical trials.
