Down go the dams

Article Abstract:

Many dams around the world are being decommissioned so that rivers and streams can recover, but ecologists are learning that removing dams takes a great deal of careful planning and active intervention because sometimes the dams provide environmental benefits, such as holding back toxic sediments or blocking the progress of invasive species. Several strategies are discussed that might prove to be the key to success of future dam removal projects.
