Easy-to-compute tensors with symmetric inverse approximating Hencky finite strain and its rate

Article Abstract:

The Hencky finite strain tensor can be effectively utilized in determining strains and stresses of materials because of its accuracy. This logarithmic strain tensor conforms with other strain tensors which make it easy to compute. Furthermore, the trace of this strain tensor for isochoric deformation diminishes and it can be separated into volumetric and isochoric strain tensors. Although Hencky finite strain tensor has advantages, it also has disadvantages such as the difficulty to calculate conjugate stress tensor and the complexity in the relationship between this tensor and the deformation rate tensor.

Scaling of quasi-brittle fracture and the fractal question

Article Abstract:

A generalized asymptotic formulation for the scaling of quasibrittle fracture shows a low probability of crack surface fractality in the observed size effect. Nonfractal propagation is extrapolated through asymptotic analysis as a limit case. The formulation uses thermodynamic laws, dimensional analysis and asymptotic expansions. The applicability of Weibull-type size effect theory to explain quasibrittle fractures is discussed.

Size effect on compressive strength of sandwich panels with fracture of woven laminate facesheet

Article Abstract:

Prismatic sandwich specimens of various sizes, geometrically scaled in ratio 1:2:4:8 are subjected to eccentric axial compression and tested to failure. The test results reveal a size effect on the mean nominal strength, which is strong enough to require consideration in design.
