Ecological restoration comes of age

Article Abstract:

The Reclamation Projects Authorization and Adjustment Act of 1992 and the 1992 Water Resources Development Act symbolize the coming of age of environmental restoration. The new restoration programs in U.S. rely on interdisciplinary teams of scientists to engineer a change from past programs that excluded comprehensive environmental management. Several restoration projects have been started by resource management agencies at local, state and federal levels. Restoration programs for California's Central Valley and Florida's Kissimmee River are more ambitious than the earlier ones.

Biodiversity generates new views on old issues

Article Abstract:

The task before ecosystem policymakers is to incorporate the conservation of biological diversity into the larger issue of ecosystem management. To maintain biodiversity in the face of growing intrusive human presence is the biggest challenge before ecosystem managers. New policy in the U.S. aims to sustain a healthy and productive ecosystem that meet diverse economic, cultural and ecological needs without diminishing the needs of future generations. Strategies for developing sustainable ecosystems are given.

Sustainability is focus of environmental policy

Article Abstract:

Resolving the debate about and assigning operational meaning to sustainability will have good consequences for U.S. environmental policy and the quality and management of natural resources. The buzzword 'sustainability' has acquired prominence in environmental vocabulary and no policy or scientific debate goes without mentioning it. However, the concept is ambiguous and open to various interpretations.
