Fast moves: instant earthquake analysis may beat the waves

Article Abstract:

Trends in real-time seismic analysis are allowing scientists to predict some aftershocks of earthquakes a few seconds in advance. The Caltech-US Geological Survey Broadcast of Earthquakes (CUBE) project is an automated paging system for transmitting data about earthquakes.

Return of the space snowballs: did a blizzard of icy comets give the earth its oceans?

Article Abstract:

Astronomer Louis A. Frank of the University of Iowa has presented evidence that the Earth is being hit with about 40,000 miniature comets and low-density ice balls daily. Experts have opposed such a theory, which Frank has attempted to prove 11 years ago.

Greenhouse gusher

Article Abstract:

Mount Etna in Italy ejects about 25 million tons of carbon dioxide annually into the atmosphere. This is the first time that a volcano has been been found to produce significant quantities of this greenhouse gas.
