Fewer men, more crime

Article Abstract:

Researchers have recognized that a large surplus of young men can lead to social disorder, as has happened on the frontier in 19th-century America. The decline in the crime rate beginning in the early 1990s saw significant changes in innercity neighborhoods, including a reduction in the number of handguns, lower drug and alcohol consumption, better policing and a tendency for drug dealers to be less violent.

The lion's share

Article Abstract:

The increasing human share of plant and fiber could have worldwide implications, including for the composition of the atmosphere and hydrological cycles. If the studies of net primary production (NPP) become more precise in future, such analyses will have great value in identifying the changing effect of consumption and technology and in evaluating policies aimed at reducing the human toll on ecosystems.
