Fighting fit

Article Abstract:

The defense industry will be emphasizing on engineering innovations despite the end of the Cold War between the superpowers because of various reasons. The weapon technology of the superpowers is exported globally because of the existing arms recession. This poses potential threats to every country. Furthermore, effective weapons which are cost-effective will be in demand because of the pressure to reduce defense spending. Therefore, innovative engineering technology on weapon systems which would cut production costs is a necessity for the country's security.

Singular solution

Article Abstract:

Researchers at Manchester University are investigating the mechanisms involved in the breakdown process of composite materials being used as electrical insulators. Their goal is to produce composite materials which can act both as insulators and as support fo electrical cables. Breakdown is affected by several factors such as the introduction of reinforcement to composite materials, compressive mechanical stress and heat.

Handle with care

Article Abstract:

Glass manufacturer Pilkington Group's flat glass sheets were time consuming to stack manually until special automated machines were introduced in early 1999. Stacking machines used at Pilkington's factory stack over eight million glass sheets per annum. Machines such as the one installed at Pilkington Micronics plant in Scotland feature AMTRI technology and pneumatically suction functionality.
