Finding Speed on the Smallest Scales

Article Abstract:

The semiannual meeting of the Materials Research Society featured a presentation by researchers on how to get clumps out of metal catalysts. Small porous polymer spheres called dendrimers can encapsulate metal particles, keeping them from sticking together. Researchers still need to prove that the dendrimers are stable and do not reduce catalytic efficiency. Findings on single-electron transistors were also presented.

Pushing the Limits

Article Abstract:

The speed of silicon-based metal oxide semiconductor transistors, the main ingredient in integrated circuits, has been increased by making the transistors smaller. In the late 20th century, however, the design of these transistors is running into thermodynamic limits and solutions need to be found to maintain the momentum for improving integrated circuits.

Finding a New Home for BESSY in the Middle East

Article Abstract:

Germany needs to decommission a synchrotron x-ray source known as BESSY 1, and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization recently met to work out a plan for its use in the Middle East. Site selection will be an important but difficult process, given all of the political factors involved.
