Flexing muscle with just one amino acid

Article Abstract:

A research team led by biochemist Brian Sykes has discovered that glutamic acid controls the shape of troponin-C, the protein in muscle cells involved in triggering muscle contractions. Glutamic acid changes the shape of the troponin-C protein by dragging a piece of the protein toward a newly bound calcium ion.

New angle for classic tale of respiratory protein and oxygen

Article Abstract:

New research indicates that the structure of myoglobin does not suppress the binding of carbon monoxide (CO) as is commonly believed. The CO molecule fits easily into myoglobin, despite the protein's angular binding site. Alternative theories to explain CO exclusion are discussed.

Paving the information superhighway with plastic

Article Abstract:

Japanese researchers have developed a plastic optical fiber that can transmit light pulses 25 times faster than the fastest copper cable. The new fiber could make it possible to link homes and other local points that require 'short-hop' connections to trunk fibers.
