Florida Power & Light copes with Andrew

Article Abstract:

Industrial facilities should also require damage assessments after storms like Hurricane Andrew. Engineers noted that Florida Power and Light's two electrical generating station facilities sufferedstructural damage including the failure of a 400 ft high reinforced concrete chimney. The chimney sustained cracks which made it unstable to withstand Florida's winds. Engineers demolished the structure using explosives but not before removing piping and equipment within the site and installing protective sand berms to protect underground utilities and nearby structures.
