Getting a grasp on working memory

Article Abstract:

Recent research has shed considerable light on the physical and chemical processes that underly the mental capacity known as working memory, a very short term memory function roughly analogous to random access memory in computers. Working memory may be directed by cells in the prefrontal cortex.

Estrogen stakes claim to cognition

Article Abstract:

Recent cellular and molecular studies have shown that estrogen can help improve learning and memory in mammals. The hormone spurs growth of brain cells, increases their chemical function and protect them from toxins. Several studies are described.

Is hippocampal cell death a myth?

Article Abstract:

New neuronal counting methods indicate that 'benign forgetfulness' in people over the age of 65 may not result from the death of nerve cells in the hippocampus as people age. This finding contradicts earlier brain-cell density research.
