Growing crystals with a twist

Article Abstract:

Cornell Univ and Sandia National Lab material scientists have minimized the defects in semiconductor crystals by placing a buffer film between crystal and substrate. An ultra-thin film and a slab of GaAs whose lattice is at a 45-degree angle to a GaAs substrate form a flexible layer that absorbs strain.

New superconductor stands up to magnetic fields

Article Abstract:

Los Alamos National Lab has made a flexible tape that superconducts at temperatures up to 77 K under high magnetic fields, making it more promising in applications such as magnetic resonance imaging. Oak Ridge Lab may have found a faster technique than Los Alamos'ion beam-assisted deposition.

Drug delivery takes a deep breath

Article Abstract:

Advancements in biotechnology have led to numerous new drug discoveries. Many of these compounds are peptides or proteins and break down in the stomach. Companies are researching alternative methods of drug administration, namely in the form of inhalers, sprays and patches.
