Researchers build a secure plasma prison

Article Abstract:

Researchers at Princeton's Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) and General Atomics' DIII-D tokamak have succeeded in taming plasma instabilities, giving hope for commercially viable fusion reactors. Particle leakage, long a problem of tokamak reactors, was reduced by a factor of 50.

EROS, MACHO, and OGLE net a haul of data

Article Abstract:

The OGLE, EROS and MACHO teams searched the sky for compact dark-matter objects in the Milky Way's halo, but instead have made some important, unexpected discoveries. These include extensive catalogs of variable stars, data on the structure of the Milky Way's bulge, and more.

Found: a star too small to shine

Article Abstract:

Astronomers at the California Institute of Technology have discovered methane in the atmosphere of a brown dwarf, an indication that its temperature is a relatively cool 1,000 kelvin. The discovery provides new information on star formation.
