Vectors of differentiation

Article Abstract:

Success products deliver a specific benefit, a vector of differentiation, to their customer. Successful products do not attempt to be all things to all people. Instead they focus on a primary theme or value proposition, rather than on specific features, as such. Apple's Macintosh used use-of-use and IBM's AS/400 used "total solution" as their vectors of differentiation. However, some companies pick the wrong product benefit, such DEC picking performance for its Alpha chip when customers preferred the compatibility delivered by Intel's products. Other companies are unaware of their product's true benefit, such as IBM when it believed the benefit of its IBM PC was its brand name when in actuality it was compatibility.
