Article Abstract:

The ongoing need to repair bridges, pipelines and sewers has prompted many researchers to seek new generations of materials that will provide long-lasting and safe infrastructure. In the US, glass fibre reinforced polymers and carbon fibre reinforced polymers are being promoted to reinforce or replace some steel and concrete bridges in Idaho. The state's first bridge reinforcement project, called Tech 21, was dedicated in July 1997 and should require little routine maintenance for 150 years. The use of composites in construction is being studied in over 300 centres around the world.
