Health care cost containment: some implications of global budgets

Article Abstract:

Expenditure caps have been suggested as a way to control US medical care costs. Limiting Medicare or Medicaid would not help as these account for only 29% of the total health care costs. Another adverse factor is the heavy burden that would be placed on physicians deciding where cuts would be made.

HMOs and AHCs - in defense of town and gown

Article Abstract:

AHCs, the research and development component of the healthcare industry, enable HMOs to remain competitive. It is the primary responsibility of AHCs to conduct medical research and provide medical education, while HMOs main task is to provide reasonable care at the lowest cost possible.

The political debate about health care: are we losing sight of quality?

Article Abstract:

An emphasis on cost control and and improving access to health care is eclipsing the issue of quality of health care in the national debate on health care reform. Controlling costs and widening access will inevitably create problems in quality.
