Healy and Collins strike a deal

Collins has agreed to lead the human genome research center in Bethesda, MD. Healy sees this as a major coup for the NIH. Collins has helped make major gains in applying gene therapy to medicine. A new institute, The National Institute for Human Genetics is expected to be formed.

Genome project plans described

Article Abstract:

Molecular geneticist Francis Collins will head the National Center for Human Genome Research (NCHGR) and plans to establish the first intramural NCHGR lab at the National Institutes of Health. Major challenges facing Collins in his new position and endeavor are described.

Healy approves an unproven treatment

Article Abstract:

Bernadine Healy approved the use of a gene therapy not yet sanctioned by NIH for a brain cancer patient. The therapy will use a genetically altered form of the patient's own cancer cells. NIH states that the approval is a unique situation that will not be repeated.
