House panel homes in on NIH

Article Abstract:

The Republican-controlled House Budget Committee has targetted the NIH for substantial funding cuts. Committee Chmn John Kasich hopes to produce a detailed plan for NIH cuts by May 1995, which could eliminate up to 10% of the agency's budget for biomedical research.

Congress: biomedical research wins big

Article Abstract:

Congress increased funding for the National Institutes of Health by 6.9% in its appropriations bill for 1997. Appropriations were also increased for the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

OSTP: a mixed midterm report

More than two years after VP Al Gore appointed Jack Gibbons head of the OSTP, it is apparent that he does not have as much influence over science policy development as many had hoped. Critics charge that the office is unproductive and impractical.
