Article Abstract:

'How do dimples on golf balls affect their flight?' is a common question which is effectively answered by Tom Veilleux, a senior scientist, and Vince Simonds, director of aerodynamic research at the Top-Flite Golf Company. Dimples reduce drag and improve lift, so golf balls fly farther, as a smooth golf ball hit by a professional would travel only half the distance as far as one with dimples.

Making memories stick

Article Abstract:

Memories are created when nerve cells in a circuit increase the strength of their connections, known as synapses. In the case of short-term memories, the effect lasts only minutes to hours where as for long-term memories the synapses become permanently strengthened. The gene activation theory necessary for long-term memory formation is discussed.

Building a brainier mouse

Research being conducted on memory and learning has led scientists to create smarter mice for study purposes. Understanding the molecular basis of learning and memory has been an ongoing project and the difference these enhanced mice will have on research is noted.
