How the body tells left from right

Article Abstract:

Researchers have come up with the theory that genes found to be active on only side of a developing embryo are responsible for the normal left-right asymmetry of internal organs. Those genes encode proteins that control correct organ structure, placement and orientation and therefore play a pivotal role in the prevention and treatment of organ malformations.

Molecular lego?

Article Abstract:

Chemists are developing a modest collection of novel molecular building blocks, bis-amino acids, which have formed protein-like structures that have rigid, readily predictable and designable shapes. These bis-peptides can be used in medicines, enzymes for catalyzing useful reactions, chemical sensors, nanoscale valves and computer storage devices.

The cellular chamber of doom

Article Abstract:

Proteasomes, which are much larger and more complex than proteases, act as destroyers of certain proteins. This destruction can have various functions, such as stopping a biochemical reaction, or playing a part in cell division.
