How to blow up a star

Article Abstract:

A white dwarf is the inert remnant of what used to be a sunlike star and are usually paragons of stability, which are thought to blow up as type Ia supernovae. If the white dwarf is left untouched, then it stays more or less in the state it was born, gradually cooling down and fading out.

Surveying space-time with supernovae

Article Abstract:

Light from supernovae which exploded billions of years ago and has recently reached earth may provide clues to speculations that the expansion of the universe is increasing. The increase in acceleration is postulated to be the result of a 'vacuum energy' that makes gravity repulsive.

The expansion rate and size of the universe

Article Abstract:

Cosmologists' newly developed methods for measuring distances to galaxies have led to new estimates of the age of the universe. The universe may be as young as 10 billion years old. Universe expansion could continue indefinitely.
