Interference in the marketplace

Article Abstract:

Legislation covering the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) performance of products will mean that most electrical and electornic equiment sold in the EC must comply with emissions and immunity regulations. The rules require that the electromagnetic disturbance generated must not exceed a certain level and that the apparatus must have sufficient levels of intrinsic immunity to electromagnetic disturbance. Cenelec is creating a series of harmonised European and compliance must be demonstrated by either the production of a technical construction file, or by manufacturing to the relevant standards.

Hidden dangers

Article Abstract:

Suppliers and users of electrical and electronic equipment will face many problems after the European Union (EU) passes the Directive on Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC). Products that do not meet the standards set by the EMC directive cannot be sold in the EU and anyone breaking the rules will be punished. Penalties could vary from a three month prison sentence to a fine of 30,000 pounds sterling. Manufacturers are responsible for designing and testing equipment, and these tests could increase prices and adversely affect sales.

Continuous activity

Article Abstract:

The electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) regulations in UK have introduced a number of complications in the quality control of products. Test house evaluation of products for EMC compliance has been observed to be accelerating. However, EMC regulations require that not only the test house example be compliant but all items leaving the factory and that compliance should be continuous and permanent. Engineers must be careful because even slight changes in design can have significant effects.
