Intermittently flowing rivers of magnetic flux

Article Abstract:

Tsuyoshi Matsuda, Akira Tonomura et al have found evidence of plastic flow of magnetic flux lines in a superconductor, using the Lorentz microscopy technique. Understanding of how flux lines become trapped and unpinned is important, since pinning is vital to the practical use of superconductors.

Superconductor flux pinning and grain boundary control

Article Abstract:

Research on flux pinning and the control of grain boundaries is providing methods to overcome the major problems in the application of high-temperature superconductors. First-generation Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O superconductors are available and a second generation is in development.
