The advent of the Internet is changing the way professional civil engineering firms conduct their business operations. This computer network, also known as the Information Superhighway, provides civil engineers with a very useful tool for gathering reliable information regarding project design and management as well as new marketing strategies. It also allows them to improve their global competitiveness.

Prominent chemical firms such as Monsanto Co. have initiated partnership with the Environment Protection Agency to evolve cleanup strategies for disposing toxic chemicals. Priority areas being jointly assessed for quality include accelerated bioremediation, in situ soil flushing, sorption/desorption and natural attenuation.
